The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is a species of marine turtles among seven in the world that irregularly nests on the Tunisian coasts and regularly on the beaches of the Kuriat Islands.
It is only after spending 20 years at sea developing that this reptile reaches sexual maturity. Only females emerge from the water to lay eggs on the beaches at night. Loggerhead females lay an average of 80-120 eggs per nest (up to 5 nests per season) and undergo a reproductive resting period of 1 to 2 years after a nesting season. In 2022, the number of nests reached 51, with a clutch size ranging from 41 to 139 eggs per nest. The nesting season in Tunisia and at Kuriat begins in May and lasts until August, with a peak frequency reached in July, as was the case in 2022.
The incubation period for the eggs is 50 days, after which the hatchlings begin to emerge towards the water. With a total number of eggs equal to 4044, only 1736 baby turtles emerged in 2022.
